After the death of Nichiren Shonin, Byakuren Ajari Nikko Shonin, one of the Six Senior Disciples left Mount Minobu and founded a temple called Taiseki-ji in Oshigahara, but left a year later in 1291. He travelled to Kitayama where he was built a hermitage. In 1298 it became Kitayama Honmon-ji. He is said to have taken some of Nichiren Shonin's ashes with him, and built a grave marker on the temple grounds. Nikko Shonin remained there for 42 years until his death at age 87.
